FAQ's About Different Mains Cables

Here is a non-exhaustive frequently asked question's section specifically designed to help you choose which cable is best for you and your system from my ever expanding range.

Question:- What is the difference between Lapp CY and Belden 19364 cable performance wise?

Answer:- Both these cables employ the "faraday loop" principal whereby there is a separate drain wire that runs along the inside entire length of the cable which is wired to the earth pin (along with the actual yellow earth wire) at the plug end, and cut well back at the equipment end. This forms a ground or faraday loop where any mains noise is kept at the plug end of the cable, not the equipment end. This helps to reduce background noise and forms a quiet area around instruments and results in an overall cleaner sounding system. The Lapp cable uses the tinned copper braiding weaved around the outside of the cable for the drain wire, the Belden has an internal drain wire and patented beldfoil insulation which is in constant contact with the drain wire to form the ground loop.

The Lapp is a reference product in Germany and is widely used succesfully in Europe, the Belden hails from the USA and was founded by the late Bob Crump of TG Audio Labs and is known as the Asylum Power Cord because Bob posted his findings on the USA site Audio Asylum.

So in summary both cables do a similar job but are quite different to look at, the Lapp is also much thicker as I only use the superior 2.5mm version even for Fig.8 cables where the earth is not wired in at the Fig.8 end.

Question:- What is your best cable regardless of price?

Answer:- I am not a dealer for Nordost nor will ever become one, I do however sell their cables mostly used ones and can categorically state that they cannot be beaten in my opinion and those of other time served audiophiles. There is also a clear up-grade path for power, i/c and speaker cables. Power cables should start with the Nordost Vishnu as anything below in their range is not as good for the money. The Vishnu is a superb cable and performance wise is way above the price you would pay even from a dealer. Once you have the up-grade bug the Nordost Brahma and finally the Valhalla for the serious audiophile. All 3 cables use solid core silver plated conductors, Vishnu 1 set , Brahma 2 sets and Valhalla 3 sets so the valhalla has 3 live wires twisted together, 3 neutral and 1 earth.  The cables are shipped with shall we politely say less than average terminations, usually brass wattgates and brass mains plugs, we re-terminate them with a choice of silver, gold or rhodium plated plugs and connectors to further improve the already superb performance.
